on Anzaldúan Thought, Art and Performance
November 4-6, 2010
The Society for the Study of Gloria Anzaldúa (SSGA) and the Women Studies Institute at the University of Texas at San Antonio are proud to announce their second international conference on the life and work of Chicana Feminist Gloria E. Anzaldúa. El Mundo Zurdo seeks to provide a place for scholars, students, and community to come together with the intention of engaging in the continued study of Anzaldúa’s intellectual and spiritual work.
UT San Antonio in collaboration with Trinity University, the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center, and Café Citlali have united their efforts to offer a series of events from November 4-6, 2010.
The conference will begin on Thursday evening (November 4) with a welcome reception at the Esperanza Center (922 San Pedro Ave.) and the viewing of the film “Altares” on the life of Anzaldúa. The main conference panels, workshops, performance, and roundtables will be held at UTSA Downtown Campus on Friday, November 5 (8:00-6:30 p.m.) and on Saturday, November 6 (8:30 – 2:30 p.m.). In addition, there will be Noche de Cultura/Cultural Night held at Café Citlali (1913 S. Flores inside Gallista Gallery) on Friday 7:00-9:00 p.m.

MALCS Gathering Nov. 6-7, 2010 San Antonio
MALCS Gathering
“Doing Work that Matters”: Bridging Letras y Cambio Social
November 6th and 7th, 2010
San Antonio, Tejas
Dear MALCista,
The MALCS Gathering launches an assessment of our organization as a national body to bridge all aspects of our organization and especially as we work to perpetually nurture and recognize the interconnection of academic labor and social activism. The MALCS Gathering entails a collective conduit through which we can explore new and existing strategies of bridging letras y cambio social.
In order to hold the gathering, the Executive Committee worked with The Society for the Study of Gloria Anzaldúa (SSGA) that graciously provided their final plenary session to MALCS in order to begin our discussion. This plenary opens up the MALCS Special Gathering to begin a series of discussions about MALCS and what we want it to become (“Doing Work that Matters”: Bridging Letras y Cambio Social, A National MALCS Roundtable, Saturday, Nov. 6).
Then on Sunday, Nov. 7 at Trinity University we will have discussion of what chapters/regions are doing as well as continue discussion on ideas, concerns, and needs in order to develop an assessment of where and how to continue.
On Monday, Nov. 8 at UTSA we will have a two-hour meeting to develop operational plans.
Your contribution as a participant will be invaluable to our project as your work has been critical to the developing MALCS’ as a national organization that dreams and acts to the fluctuating political landscape.
